For years now, TV networks have used their online presence to promote their series with extra digital content, like deleted clips, and behind-the-scenes glimpses. ABC is now expanding on that tactic by creating seven original shows that will only be available on its website or one of its mobile or connected TV apps.
ABC relaunched its streaming service on Wednesday in an attempt to draw more eyes to its online content, complete with seven new, original short-form TV shows, as well as full episodes of older shows.
The content is free, meaning anyone can watch via ABC.com and the ABC apps for mobile and connected TV devices without signing in with a pay-TV subscription.
“Our team has completely re-imagined the digital viewing experience for ABC fans,” Karin Gilford, SVP of Digital Media, ABC Television Network, said in a statement. “All of this allows us to expand beyond the bounds of our linear schedule and extend ABC storytelling to viewers across screens and platforms.”
In an attempt to keep the attention of viewers who came to the site to watch full episodes of current TV shows, the network created tie-ins with its new content.
For example, one of the shows, Boondoogle, stars Ty Burrell from Modern Family, while others tie into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Bachelorette.
Additionally, Re/code points out that the digital short shows aren’t held to the same censorship standards as traditional network broadcasts: the opening line of Boondoogle includes an un-bleeped F-word.
