We Can’t Decide If Carnival Using Facial Recognition To Sell Passengers Photos Is Creepy Or Cool

As the world we live in becomes more and more digital, there are definitely some conveniences, but there is also the chance to feel a bit too connected. THat’s why we can’t decide if a cruise line using facial recognition software to identify passengers in photos is a cool bit of tech or is just downright creepy.

Carnival’s newest ship, the Vista, just took its first transatlantic voyage and is now docked in New York to showcase what the company claims is its largest ship, AdWeek reports.

The boat also boasts a high-tech photo lab where passengers can check out photos of themselves: Carnival is testing facial recognition software that can identify passengers in the photos its onboard photographers take during cruises, and then dumps those pictures in a special account set up for each guest.

Passengers can then decide whether or not they want to buy those photos as souvenirs of their trip.

On the one hand, it’s a lot easier than Carnival printing out all the photos and then having passengers search through a sea of photos hung on the wall for their own faces. But also… it’s a bit creepy that the boat is, in a sense, watching you, and knows your face.
